Assembly for 5–7 year-olds
Aims
- To think about the theme of change (or 'transformation').
- To introduce the Box Tops for Books scheme.
Preparation
- Make a collection of 20–30 empty cereal boxes (you could put one class in charge of
collecting them the week before).
- Find some old books (that won’t suffer from being used in a tower!).
Starter
- Place the boxes on one side and the books on another. Select two pairs of children and
challenge them to make the tallest tower they can, using either the books or boxes.
Time them for a minute. Compare the towers – was the result what they expected?
- Introduce the word ‘transformation’ by making the amazing claim that you know
a way to transform/change a pile of old cereal boxes into a pile of brand new books. You
will come back to it later...
Story/Information
- There are many books and stories that are about amazing changes…
Read or tell a story which involves transformation, e.g. the story of Zaccheaus from the Bible – a tax collector who stole and cheated was transformed by meeting Jesus
OR The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle – the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.
- Introduce the Box Tops for Books scheme: remind the children that you claimed to be able to transform these boxes into books.
Show the children how to find the voucher on the top of the cereal box and cut it out.
Explain that the school will be able to trade these vouchers in for new books. Talk about the type of books that you will be collecting: stories they can listen to and read for themselves, information books for finding out about all sorts of things. (You could also talk about the rest of the box being recycled – another transformation/change.)
Reflection
- Finish by giving children a little time to reflect about how they will change or ‘transform’
during their time at school. They will learn new things and get better at reading and writing. They will
also grow bigger and stronger.
