Curriculum links:

  • Science – England and Wales
  • The World around us, Science and technology – Northern Ireland
  • Sciences – Scotland

Content:

  • Whiteboard: Read the text describing the function of the three different types of teeth. Identify the key words and phrases. Use these key words and phrases to complete a table summarising the information.
  • Activity sheet: Read another piece of text about teeth (with similar content). Search for the key words and phrases that can be used to complete labels for diagrams of three types of tooth.
  • Extension: Use the information to design a leaflet for younger children visiting a dentist which tells them all about their teeth.

Suggestions for questions:

  • Activate prior knowledge: Are all your teeth the same shape? Why do you think that they are different?
  • Reflect on learning: Can you explain how to identify the key words and phrases? What did we learn about our teeth?
  • Stimulate further research: What are a dog’s teeth like? Or a sheep’s? Compare them to human teeth. Why do you think they are different?
